Mediumship 101: And How You Can Do It Too

Learn how mediumship works, how Spirit communicates, and simple ways to connect with your loved ones on the other side.

    Watch the detailed video here:

Love Doesn’t End — It Just Changes Languages

One of the biggest misunderstandings about death is the idea that it ends our relationships. It doesn’t. Not even close.

The bond remains — it just changes form. And mediumship is the language of that bond.

I’m here to tell you that mediumship is absolutely real — and more importantly, it’s something you can learn to do.

Not because you need to be “special.”
Not because you need a gift handed down through five generations of witchy grandmothers.
But because you're already a spirit in a body — and spirit knows how to speak spirit.

Mediumship is simply remembering a language you forgot you were fluent in.

Your Consciousness Doesn’t Die — It Transitions

Let’s talk science for a hot second.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
We learned that in middle school while chewing on mechanical pencils and pretending not to have a crush on anyone.

If energy leaves the body when we die… where does it go?
It doesn’t disappear. It doesn’t evaporate. It transforms.

That animating force — consciousness, soul, spirit, whatever word fits your worldview — continues. And mediumship is simply the practice of tuning into that continued existence.

Think of it like a radio station.
    You aren’t creating the music.
You’re just adjusting your dial to the right frequency.

Some people were born with the dial naturally close to the station.
Others grew up in houses with a lot of static — trauma, fear, religion that taught them to be afraid of intuition, or a family culture that shut down sensitivity.

    But muscles can be trained.
    Intuition can rebuild.
And the ability to connect with Spirit is available to everyone.

What a Medium Actually Is (Spoiler: You Can Be One)

A lot of people think a medium is someone with Hollywood-level powers — a crystal ball, smoky room, dramatic gasps as a candle flickers in the wind.

Nope. A medium is nothing more than a translator.

Someone who bridges physical communication and energetic communication. Someone who receives images, words, sensations, memories, symbols — and turns that into meaning.

Mediumship isn’t always a clear sentence in your head.
It’s usually imagery, signs, sensations, and symbolic communication.

Let me give you an example.

If I ask, “Which ancestor wants to talk with me?” and I see:

    • A cardinal

    • An apple

    • Fireworks

I already know — Grandma. She’s known for her apple pies, her birthday is the 4th of July, and she sends a cardinal to say hello.

That’s how Spirit communicates. It’s like hearing a song you haven’t heard in 30 years, but somehow you still know every damn lyrics.

    Your soul recognizes them.

And yes — you can learn this language, too.

But Isn’t Mediumship Scary? (Short Answer: No. Long Answer: Still No.)

A lot of people avoid mediumship because they’re afraid of “opening a portal” or inviting something dark.

I promise you — it’s not like the movies.
Your dead aunt isn’t going to pop out of your TV like a paranormal FaceTime.

    Here’s the truth:

    • Talking to Spirit does NOT summon anything negative

    • You cannot “accidentally” call in evil beings

    • Loved ones communicate through love, not fear

    • Intentionality protects you more than anything else

Mediumship is not possession, channeling, or handing your body over.
    You stay you.
    You stay in control.
    You stay grounded.

    But—and here’s the therapist-me talking—your emotional state matters.

    Fear attracts fear.
    Groundedness attracts clarity.
    Desperation attracts static.
    Love attracts connection.

This is why protection, grounding, and boundaries are essential.

Why Grounding + Protection Matter (And Why I Never Skip It)

Before I open any spiritual channel — cards, Records, mediumship, clearing work — I always:

    ✔️ Ground
    ✔️ Clear
    ✔️ Protect

Not because I’m scared. Because I respect the work.

Mediumship is like washing your hands before performing surgery — it’s not about fear of germs, it’s about honoring the process.

When you open from love and neutrality, you connect with the beings who love you.
When you open from fear, grief, or anxiety, the messages get muddy.

And this is the moment where most people tell me:

“But Vanessa… what if I connect with something bad?”

    Let’s talk about that.

What If the Spirit Feels… Off?

If you ever feel energy that is:

    • Angry

    • Confused

    • Draining

    • Disoriented

    • Or simply doesn’t feel like a loved one

You’re likely dealing with a stuck or unrested soul — not an evil one.

That is my Sacred Crossings work.
Helping souls move on is part of my spiritual job description.

    But that’s advanced work.
(And not what we’re doing here.)

For beginners and for loved-one communication, intention is your filter. When you call in someone specific — mom, grandma, husband, child, friend — that’s who comes.

You are not randomly scrolling the spirit world. You’re dialing one number.

How Spirit Actually Communicates With You

Spirits don’t have bodies, so they use energy to talk to us.
And energy interacts with the world in all kinds of fascinating ways.

Here are the most common ways loved ones reach out:

    1. Music

    They LOVE using music.
Because music hits your emotions fast.

    You think of them.
    You ask for support.
And suddenly, your song comes on the radio like they hacked Spotify.

    2. Animals

Birds, butterflies, dragonflies, deer, hawks — especially ones that behave strangely or appear at impossible moments.

Animals are sensitive to energy and easy for Spirit to influence.

    3. Coins

    Yes, coins.
    Every medium has coin stories.
Some families even choose specific denominations as signs.

    Coins show up on:

    • sidewalks

    • car floors

    • washing machines

    • checkout counters

    • or in multiples when Spirit really wants your attention.

    4. Dreams

    Visitation dreams feel different.

    Colors are brighter.
    You remember the details.
You wake up feeling hugged or spoken to.
Sometimes they give real information — like my mom’s parents giving her baby gender predictions that were always correct 12 grandkids and counting.

    5. Sensations

    A chill on one side.
    A sudden warmth.
    Pressure on your shoulder.
    Their perfume.
    Their tobacco.
    Their stew recipe.
    Their “I’m here” energy.

    6. Synchronicity

    License plates.
    Signs.
    Songs.
    Names.
    Repeating symbols.
A hummingbird in February in Michigan (but you’ll have to watch the YouTube video for that story).

They will find a way to reach you.

    7. Cards

Yes — tarot and oracle cards are tools Spirit can influence.
If they can give you a memory, they can absolutely make a card pop.

    8. Akashic Records

This is the gateway that opened mediumship for me personally.
Your soul book contains your lineage, your guides, your ancestors — and accessing the Akashic frequency naturally puts you in the “spirit communication zone.”

    A Quick Mediumship Exercise

    Try this right now.

    1.     Picture a white golf ball in your palm.

    2.     See it turn blue, red, green, pink, black, then back to white.
    Easy, right?

    Now:

    3.     Think of a loved one in Spirit.

    4.     Ask them to put a small object in your hand.

    5.     See it. Feel it. Sense it.

    6.     Try changing its colors.

If the color-shifting gets harder, that means you connected with their energy imprint — not just your imagination.

This is how subtle mediumship can be.
    Not dramatic.
    Not scary.
    Sacred.

    You’re Not Broken. You’re Sensitive.

    If you’ve ever:

    • felt overwhelmed by energy

    • sensed someone near you

    • seen shadows

    • smelled perfume

    • heard messages

    • gotten intuitive hits you couldn’t explain

    You’re not broken.

Spirit-sensitive people often grow up thinking something is wrong with them.
    But sensitivity is not dysfunction.
    It’s a spiritual language.

And mediumship is one of the ways you speak it.

Mediumship Is About Healing, Not Proof

There are evidential mediums who spend whole sessions proving who the spirit is — dates, names, hobbies, personality, cause of death.

    And that is beautiful work.

But in my practice, I’m more interested in:

“What do they want you to know that helps you heal?”

Because for many people — especially those with complicated family histories — the evidence doesn’t always mean much.
But the message can change everything.

Mediumship, at its best, is therapeutic.
    A conversation between worlds.
    A moment of grace.
    A bridge of healing.

How to Ask for a Sign

    This part is simple:

    Just ask.

    “Send me a purple feather.”
“Show me you’re here with a chill on my right shoulder.”
“Play our song in the next 24 hours.”

    Then watch.

    Not with pressure.
    Not with desperation.
    Just with openness.

Spirit will use ANYTHING to reach you — memories, media, music, animals, objects, people, dreams, signs.
